The detective (ডিটেকটিভ) Bengali film Hoichoi is a adaptation of a story by Rabindranath Tagore. The story takes us to the era of the Partition of Bengal when the oppressive British government wanted to divide our motherland in the name of religion.

Professor Arunvo Chatterjee is the leader of a group of freedom fighters, where two lovebirds, Sudhamukhi and Manmatha, wanted to share their lives. However, the professor found out about this and did not want the relationship to flourish because he believed that any kind of love other than love for the country would lead to their commitment.
When Sudhamukhi’s father wanted to quit his studies and get married, Sudhamukhi unknowingly tied the knot with a government employee working in the intelligence agency, who was responsible for capturing freedom fighters in India on behalf of the British government. Mahimchandra, Sudhamukhi’s husband is ignorant to swallow her marriage and he is always engrossed in detective novels especially the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
The government has little interest in resolving petty cases. He wants something more complex and interesting that is nutritious for his brain and where he can utilize the knowledge he has gathered from reading his favorite detective novels. Hutson, Mahim’s assistant, follows him and sometimes even overtakes him. Mahimchandra though calls him Watson.
Analysis Joydeep Mukherjee has directed the detectives. That’s terrible. The story is decent, and follows a number of scene-based plot plans, but the director fails to present a convincing and compelling narrative. The opening set in London is a set of work and the visual effects are fun, setting the mood perfectly for everything that could go wrong in the inaugural movie. Humor covers the whole place and doesn’t work.
The irony fails, and everything looks annoying. Nothing changes when we arrive at the original description. Everything related to office work and ‘intelligence’ tracks is done boringly. Maybe the director wanted to express monotony, but instead of expressing it, he showed it. The main problem, of course, is the display of silly humor on the screen and the catastrophic consequences. What sparks hope in the ongoing turmoil is the equation of the wife and her leadership (who is going through the duality of husband and detective).
There are a few small moments that are predictable but still hit the right notes, however, they are short, very far and few. The biggest problem for detectives is the blurry and flexible narrative. It ranges from satirical and satirical melodies to deadly patriotic dramas involving the freedom struggle. Then, as mentioned above, there is an ex-boyfriend entangled with the trail of husband and wife. The story that is further involved is the detective track involving the current husband and ex-boyfriend.
It has been terribly effective and gives a messy feel. The multi-genre mix gives an impressive idea. All of these can still be given a pass if there is some thrill or fun in the narrative. Sadly, there is no one at all on that score. Overall, Detective is a mending narrative that covers the whole place, no fun or thrills. It’s a disaster effective, and poor performance drowns the whole thing. Give it a miss. You will not miss much.
