Story: Buchi Paswan (Adil Hussain) is a rickshaw puller who has big dreams for his only son Bulbul (Shubh Jha) and decides to send a 10th class student to a private school for a better life. With others taking the child to the GBS and raising bills because of the socio-economic position of his family, how far can Buchi go to realize the dream he had for his child..
Such is the story of rickshaw puller Buchchi (Adil Hussain), who picks up rich kids from their comfortable home and throws them in front of the huge building of Sapphire International School. She does this every morning and afternoon, while her son dreams of studying in one of those well-equipped classrooms.
Bucci, however, remained his aokat. Her son attends a state board government school, where the rare presence of a teacher is revered. Buchi and his wife (Priyanka Bose), who worked in a local factory, make sure they work hard in the field so that their son can study without worrying about money. “Padhai karna hai tumhe bas, ohi rast humare issue narak se niklane ka,” the rickshaw puller says to the boy.
Her dream of going to an English-secondary school came true when she found a cash wallet in her rickshaw. He received the uniform, begged the high-class masters and madams, and admitted his son to the elite school. This “aokat se bahar ka swapna” is spent for him when he cannot hold their endless financial demands. In desperation he goes to crime, only to be lusted after by an unjust society.
The lines must be blurred to establish each and every point of the letters. In one scene, for example, a student at Sapphire International School throws her books and bags down the street after an exam, which Buchi picks up. The boy says to the rickshaw puller, “Hum Singapore holiday pe ja rahe hai, vaha se naya lege.” Jha left no room for expressions or silent moments like speaking loudly in the exam.
The actors of the film, however, hold their audience, especially Adil and Priyanka. Adil is drawing his character, starting from the moment of acquaintance of his home and setting foot in the brutal world. The frustration of getting out of the hell called poverty is most visible in his eyes. Priyanka is also effective in the role of earning a strong, courageous companion Ruti-Roger.
The examination was released at an appropriate time, the government has recently made major changes in the education system. Will the new education system provide a level playing field for students of all levels? Only time will tell. But the stories we hear every day raised by poor children have a lot of painful backstory and testing gives them a platform and the rest of us verify a reality.
