The Family Man from Amazon Prime Video answers all these questions and much more. Set in TASC, a fictional intelligence agency in Mumbai, The Family Man takes us into the world of Srikanth Tiwari, shamelessly played by Manoj Vajpayee, who was a father to fight a teenage girl in addition to being a sustainable intelligence officer, and has been married for over 15 years. .
The show begins in the clear blue waters of the Arabian Sea, where the Coast Guard intercepts a boat and we meet with some former ISIS recruits on the run. Indications are gathered and evidence is gathered that points to the onslaught of terrorist attacks in India. From there the cat-and-mouse chase begins, where Srikanth and his team gather intelligence through surveillance, phone tapping and good-old fashion analysis. The chase took us to Kashmir, Quetta, Balochistan and then to New Delhi.
Family Man tries to weave international and national geopolitical and current events into the show. The beginning of the recruitment of an ISIS in Kerala was caught in the 2002 Godhra riots. The rush also takes us to Kashmir where the plight of the average Kashmiri is also addressed. As a final piece of the puzzle, ISIS has forged alliances with Daesh and militant elements bordering Pakistan. The tagline of the show is ‘Inspired by Daily News Story’ and if a miracle happens you forget what is happening around us, this show will provide a cliff note version.
The shattered marriage proves to be more exploitative than the convoluted geopolitical game that drives the plot. Srikanth grabs the code for an Islamist terrorist conspiracy called “Operation Zulfiqar”, which is being orchestrated “somewhere” by ISIS terrorists and Pakistani agents and run by locals. One of these men pleads for his innocence and says that he missed his mother, and Srikanth acted as well.
A group of politically minded Muslim college students also appear to be involved in the conspiracy. “Secrecy is a myth just like democracy,” Srikanth said, banning surveillance of students without some irony. Unbeknownst to them, the camera-equipped factories in their dormitory rooms seem to provide some apprehension, but as the first season stretches to 10 episodes and ends in a cliffhanger, Srikanth has a long way to go before the truth can be revealed.
Things have gotten bigger since Srikanth was sent to Kashmir – resulting in laziness. Perhaps a punishment posting is an opportunity for Srikanth to further investigate Operation Zulfiqar and flirt with his commanding officer Saloni (Gul Panag), who seems to be an old flame. Boys are always the boys in The Family Man. Talpad gives Zoya an over once when she joins the team and the volunteers give her “a tour” which is as overwhelming as it gets.
The weak traits of the terrorists make most of them interchangeable, but other characters benefit from sharp writing and greater empathy. Vajpayee’s Srikanth is an impossible and often indomitable hero. Srikanth is not living a double life as much as he is lying to himself, and acting in Vajpayee’s subtle tone has expressed this idea in a powerful way.
Priyamani introduces a warm and triumphant performance as a neglected wife, who quietly presents herself and forgets her own way. Sharib Hashmi and Sharad Kelkar stand out from the supporting actors and Neeraj Madhav is impressive among the bearded traitors for getting sick in India.
